| Sumario: | Objective: To determine whether low birth weight is a risk factor associated with neonatal polycythemia in the Neonatology service of a Public Hospital in Peru. Materials and Methods: Our study is a retrospective, cross-sectional, case-control study. There were 49 newborns who met the criteria for low birth weight and neonatal polycythemia and 98 newborns were the controls. We performed a simple probabilistic and random sampling. The information obtained was processed with the statistical software Epi Info 7.2.5.0 and Microsoft Excel 2020. Results: Of the 49 cases, 32 (65.3%) were male, while 17 were female (34.7%). We found that in 2020, 17 newborns were diagnosed with neonatal polycythemia, representing the year with the highest incidence (1%), followed by 2023, where we found 9 newborns diagnosed with neonatal polycythemia, with an incidence of 0.5%. Likewise, in 2020 we found 71 newborns diagnosed with low birth weight, of which 9 (12.7%) had neonatal polycythemia, followed by 2022 with 110 newborns who had low birth weight, of which 8 (7.3%) had neonatal polycythemia. We used the chi-square test to detect if there was an association between the variables, finding a p value = 0.000023; an Odds ratio = 3.000, with a 95% CI: (1.785-5.042); We demonstrated the association in our study. Conclusion: In the Neonatology service of a public hospital in Peru, we found an association between low birth weight and neonatal polycythemia. |
