Sumario:Low birth weight (LBW) is defined as a baby born weighing less than 2500 grams. It is one of the leading public health problems worldwide. In Ecuador, there is limited evidence on the factors that contribute to LBW. The objective of this research was to determine the factors associated with low birth weight in Ecuador. An analytical cross-sectional observational study was conducted using the open-access database of the second round of the National Survey of Child Malnutrition (ENDI); data from a total of 13737 children under 5 years of age were included. Differences in sociodemographic characteristics, pregnancy-related characteristics, and pregnancy counseling characteristics regarding LBW were verified using the chi-square test. Logistic regression analysis was performed to verify factors related to LBW. The overall LBW prevalence was 8.29%. Female newborns from the mountain region, born to mothers living in poverty, who had prenatal checkups, who consumed micronutrients, and who did not receive counseling during pregnancy were the factors significantly associated with LBW in the present study.
