| Sumario: |
“From Memory to Mitochondria: Quercetin’s Influence on Neurodegenerative Processes” offers an exhaustive assessment of quercetin, a unique dietary flavonoid, as an effective neuroprotective molecule pertinent to aging and age-related neurodegenerative diseases. The article strongly underscores the potential of quercetin to interfere with oxidative stress, modulate mitochondrial integrity, and counteract neuroinflammation, thus targeting critical pathological features of diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, and related cognitive disorders. Mechanisms are highlighted, including control of key signaling cascades such as the Nrf2-mediated antioxidant defense system, nuclear factor (NF)-κB-associated inflammatory response, and phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase/PKB (PI3K/Akt) pathway related to neuronal survival and synaptic function. Apart from molecular interactions, the narrative includes quercetin and its effects on neurogenesis, memory consolidation, and cognitive resilience, emphasizing its translational potential for the upkeep of brain health. The abstract also recognizes the challenges, especially the poor bioavailability of the compound, rapid metabolic rate, and weak blood–brain barrier (BBB) permeability, which may hinder its therapeutic potential. To circumvent these limitations, the review also discusses novel delivery approaches such as nanocarrier-based delivery systems, physical and chemical structural modifications, as well as co-administration with bioactive molecules. These strategies seek to improve the pharmacological profiles and clinical use of quercetin. By integrating molecular neuroscience and translational pharmacology, this study identifies quercetin as a potential integrative therapeutic approach for addressing mitochondrial dysfunction and memory decline. In the end, the review highlights the need for more translational investigation of quercetin in clinical trials, which may open up opportunities for novel approaches in the management of neurodegenerative diseases and successful aging.
|
