Sumario:
Eosinophilic oesophagitis (EoE) is an immune-mediated disease of the oesophagus that has become an important cause of dysphagia and food impaction in both adults and children. This chapter explains how EoE leads to epithelial injury, remodelling, and progressive narrowing of the oesophageal lumen. It describes the most common clinical features, including intermittent dysphagia, chest discomfort, and feeding difficulties in children, along with diagnostic methods based on clinical symptoms and histological confirmation of eosinophilic infiltration. Current management options – including dietary modification, proton pump inhibitors, corticosteroid therapy, and endoscopic dilation – are reviewed. The chapter also explains the relationship between EoE and allergic or immune-related conditions, aiming to support earlier recognition, diagnosis, and more effective treatment strategies.
